Veterinary Consultations
You have taken the time to come and see us, and we want to make sure that we do everything possible to deal with your concerns.
Our consultations are aimed at providing a thorough physical examination of your pet. We will discuss in detail any problems, suggested treatment and the cost and the benefits and/or risks involved.
Consultations are run by appointment, but this should only be used as a guide. Occasionally additional time may be needed for an individual case or we may be presented with an emergency, which takes priority. When this happens we will endeavor to get back on track as soon as possible.
Nurses Clinics
We have very experienced staff at the Animal Hospital and we like to utilize them as much as possible. Our nurses are on hand to give advice on many different aspects of pet care, including puppy and kitten care, feeding, worming, flea prevention, microchip implanting and post operative checks. If you have questions regarding these clinics please ring our reception.
Vaccinations
We advise that your pet receives an initial course of vaccinations and thereafter annual boosters. For more information please go to
FAQs.
Microchipping
Pet identification is paramount and we highly recommend implanting a small permanent identity chip. For more information please go to
FAQs.
Flea & Worming Control
Flea and worming treatment is a necessary part of animal care and we advise that these treatments are given routinely. For more information please go to
FAQs.
Anesthesia & Sedation
As with humans sedation and anaesthesia there is an element of risk, no matter how healthy the patient may be. Fortunately, with the vast majority of pets this risk is very low and thankfully problems with sedation or anaesthesia are few and far between.
To help keep the risks as low as possible, we will always carry out a physical exam before any medications are given, and we may also recommend that we carry out a blood test beforehand. This will help us to take the necessary steps to minimise the risk of any potential problems.
When your pet is undergoing any kind of sedation or anaesthesia we use the most modern methods and equipment available to us, including :
• Intravenous fluids
• Respiratory monitors
• Cardiac Monitors
• Advanced pre-medications
• Ultra-short acting injectable anaesthetics
• Reversible sedations
• Gas anaesthetics which wear off very quickly and have low toxicity
• Surgical nurses who carefully and regularly monitor your pet's vital signs.
Our staff are well trained to help minimise any risks, shorten the recovery time and avoid any other associated potential complications. This ensures that your pet recovers quickly and can go home with minimal anaesthetic side effects.
We will NOT recommend anaesthesia unless we believe it is necessary or when the benefits are substantially greater than the risks. If you have any questions or concerns regarding any of the above and your pet, please ask your vet.
Neutering
Neutering your pet is the responsible thing to do. It helps to prevent many behavioral and health issues and eliminates unwanted puppies/kittens. For more information go to
FAQs.
Dental Care
Dental care is essential for people and it is just as important for our four legged friends. Along with regular brushing and feeding the correct diet, regular dental check-ups is advisable. For more information go to
FAQs
Radiography
Sometimes a consultation alone is not sufficient to reach a definite diagnosis when your pet has a problem. Further investigation may be needed and x-rays may be appropriate for more information. Generally when we x-ray a pet we tend to use either sedation or anesthesia. This reduces stress and allows us to take the best image possible.
Laboratory Testing
Laboratory tests are an essential tool in diagnosing many metabolic conditions. Certain blood tests can be performed quickly and efficiently on our premises such as checking liver and kidney function. Screening very ill or elderly patients prior to sedation or general anaesthesia allows us to modify treatment where appropriate. We often send tissue specimens etc. to an external laboratory for analysis and once we receive results we will discuss them in depth with you and recommend the next steps in your pet's care.
Surgery
Out team of veterinary surgeons hold a wide range of skills and expertise enabling us to perform the majority of your pet’s surgical requirements. From time to time we may refer your pet to a specialist. We are equipped with a modern operating theatre. We provide quality post operative treatment and nursing. High standards in hygiene is a top priority and sterility procedures in keeping with modern practice are carried out to minimise the risk of post surgical infections such as MRSA.
We aim to achieve a high rate of success in surgical procedures, however some complications can occur, but thankfully this is uncommon. When they do however, we deal with them vigorously and are usually successful in overcoming them.
Medications & Prescription
After a consultation or a stay in hospital many pets may be going home with medications. These, just like the medication you receive from your doctor, are under prescription and are only available from the veterinary practice. We stock most medications and therefore can prescribe them without delay and with no additional effort on your part. We occasionally receive requests for repeat prescriptions without seeing the pet, but this is usually not possible because, by law, the vet must be sure that the drug they are prescribing is being used properly.
There are many occasions where a vet may prescribe a pet long-term medication for a chronic condition. The vet will advise you on how often your pet needs to be seen, as this will differ with the specific condition. But in these situations medications can be dispensed between visits. We would ask you to give us 24 hours notice for repeat prescriptions; this allows us to have your medication ready for you to collect at our reception.
Referrals
We pride ourselves on being able to deliver most of your pet’s veterinary care, but from time to time we may need to refer your pet to a specialist as we may not have the facilities or the in-house skills to deal with the case ourselves. If this occurs we will do our best to get you an appointment as soon as possible but unfortunately there can be delays but we will endeavor to make these as short as possible.
Dog Grooming
Our groomer Nicola has been working with us since 2001, before which she trained as a veterinary nurse. She works out of our grooming parlour which is located on the premises and caters for all sizes of dogs from the smallest Chihuahua to very long haired rough collies. You can contact her on 087 860 7790 and she will get back to you with her next available appointment.
