Prda is a 7 year old Jack Russel Terrier. She came in to The Animal Hospital feeling very unwell. She was not eating her food and was feeling very off form indeed. When our vets questioned the owner , we realised that Prda had been in season only 2 weeks previously, so they immediately suspected a pyometria, which is a very dangerous womb infection. The uterus fills with a nasty pus that if leaked into the body could be fatal to poor prda. She was brought in for xrays and bloods which told us what we had feared. Prda had a womb infection.
When we received her blood results, we discovered that her blood cell levels were very low. We were worried that she may also have an autoimmune disease. At 18% , this is very low. We had to have a blood donor on standby incase the level went below 10% and she needed a transfusion. She was placed on intravenus fluids to keep her stabilised, as soon she would need to have surgery to remove her infected womb.
Prda’s surgery went well with no complications. She had to stay in The Animal Hospital for 1 more night after her surgery just to make sure everything was ok before she went home. She has been in for regular checks since then, and her blood results have returned to almost normal, improving everytime we see her. We concluded that her low blood count level was not an autoimmune disease and was due to the huge infection within her tiny body. Prda was going to be fine!!!
Now its been almost a month since Prda has had her surgery, all her stitches have been removed. All of us here, as well as her delighted owners were so happy to see her bounce in the door like a normal lively Jack Russel. Its great to have their lovely Prda back!
She has been awarded our December Pet of the Month! Well done Prda!
