Meet Buster! He is a gorgeous 10 year old Shih Tzu that had a very scary day on Tuesday that he will never forget. He went for a walk with his owner to the park, as was his daily routine. A very naughty larger dog didn’t like the look of poor Buster and decided to pick a fight with him. Buster did not even try to defend himself as the other dog was grabbing his neck and swinging him around. His owner was very scared and once he was back in her arms after a long struggle, she rushed him straight to The Animal Hospital for medical attention.
Once we had him stabilised Buster, by treating him for shock and pain relief to give him some comfort, we were able to see puncture wounds under Busters chest and a very brushed neck from his ordeal. When we were able to sedate him to clean them up, we could see that poor Buster had a pnemothorax, which is when one or more of the lungs have been punctured. Luckily for him it was only on the one side of his chest, so he was able to breathe without major difficulty but it needed to be mended quickly before his lungs collapsed and he would then need help to breathe.
The surgery went well and also Buster had to have a chest drain put in place, he recovered smoothly and so far with no issues. He has been with us every day over the last week to have his wounds cleaned and his daily doses of pain relief and antibiotics to prevent infection. He is a sweetheart and has been so good all through his treatment, that everyone has agreed he should be our May pet of the month. Well done Buster!
Buster has been to see us today and had his drain removed and although he is still very bruised, his wounds are healing well and he is in good spirits! He is a very lucky dog indeeed!
